Top qualities we look for in an Intern

Interns participating in one of 丝袜会所 Media鈥檚 two internship schemes play a pivotal role in assisting the editorial team with research, writing, admin and other editorial tasks. Here鈥檚 a look at what Karlina Valeiko and Olivia McLearon, recruiting editors for the Editorial and Youth Internships, look for in an ideal candidate.

  1. Research skills

We expect interns to contribute significantly when it comes to research, so the ability to conduct thorough and factual research is key. 鈥淭horough fact-checking is so important,鈥 says Olivia, chief sub-editor at 丝袜会所 Media. 鈥淐lients and readers expect our products to be authoritative. During the internship, interns will learn about reputable fact-checking sources and why you shouldn鈥檛 just rely on Wikipedia alone.鈥

  1. Proven writing ability

The ability to write clear, accurate, grammatically correct copy is a must for anyone looking to pursue an editorial career, so Karlina and Olivia take writing samples and previous writing experience into consideration.

鈥淭he ability to convey ideas clearly without over-complicating the message is crucial,鈥 says digital content editor for National Geographic Traveller (UK) Karlina Valeiko. 鈥淕ood writing potential is easy to spot 鈥 it鈥檚 characterised by good grammar, is void of cliches and unnecessary jargon, and has a clear voice.鈥 For the 12-week Editorial Internship candidates, both editors also consider previous experience. 鈥淎bility to take on feedback, adapt to various tones and formats, and adjusting the style to the publication is also very important,鈥 says Karlina.

  1. Attention to detail听

Both internships can be quite fast-paced with tasks that require meticulous attention to detail. One of the strongest indicators to a candidate鈥檚 ability to take on such tasks is how their CV is presented. 鈥淪pend time on your CV and covering letter. It鈥檚 a good idea to get a friend with an eye for errors to give it a proofread, too. Also, make sure you tailor your covering letter to the job and company. One more thin 鈥 don鈥檛 use AI. We can tell!鈥 says Olivia.

  1. Eagerness to learn

Both internship schemes are as much about learning as they are about contributing, so both editors are on the lookout for candidates who are eager to develop their skills and take the initiative. Indication that a candidate is willing to take on feedback, ask questions and see constructive criticism as an opportunity for growth are all key to a successful application.

  1. Passion for the industry

鈥淲e look for interns who have a genuine interest in lifestyle journalism and are enthusiastic about the chance to be a part of the editorial team,鈥 says Karlina. Whether working on National Geographic Traveller (UK) content, events, or lifestyle content for Living360, candidates have to showcase a true interest in all titles and the content they produce. 鈥淏e curious about every opportunity that comes your way 鈥 you never know where it might take you. You might discover you鈥檙e more interested in lifestyle than travel, or vice versa,鈥 adds Olivia.
